Manufacturing in Europe or Asia: lead times, minimum orders and traceability

Quick answer: manufacturing in Asia can pay off for large volumes of a product that is already defined. For short runs, bespoke pieces, tight deadlines or projects that demand control and traceability, manufacturing in Europe usually works out better when you calculate the total cost and not just the unit price.

Lead time

On top of production time comes sea freight, which from Asia usually takes several weeks, plus customs and distribution. A European manufacturer delivers by road in days, and a last-minute change does not mean waiting for the next container.

Minimum orders

Large Asian manufacturers work with high minimum orders so that the container ships full. In Europe it is easier to manufacture from a prototype or a short run, and to restock in small batches as sales require.

Quality control and samples

Being able to visit the factory, see the prototype and check the first units in person reduces the risk that the series is not what was expected. At a distance, that check depends on photos or contracted inspections.

Traceability and regulation

European regulation increasingly requires proof of the legal origin of timber (for example, the EU Deforestation Regulation) and compliance with furniture safety and strength standards. With European suppliers and manufacturing, that documentation is easier to gather and verify.

Design protection

For a brand or a designer, manufacturing close by and under a non-disclosure agreement reduces the risk of copies and makes it easier to defend the design if they appear.

When Asia pays off

Standard products, large volumes, long and predictable lead times, and designs that are no longer going to change. In those cases the unit price can outweigh everything else. In all others, it is worth running the numbers on total cost: freight, duties, tied-up stock, returns and team time.

Frequently asked questions

What is your minimum order?

We have none: we manufacture from a single piece or a prototype.

Can you make a series that is currently made in Asia?

Yes. We review the product, suggest manufacturing improvements if there are any and give you a price and lead time per batch.

Do you document the origin of the timber?

Yes. We work with FSC-certified timber and low-formaldehyde panels (CARB2).
